Station 83 - Fire Headquarters
Built in 1978, Fire Headquarters was a result of consolidating the old No. 2 firehouse at Linden Avenue and Crawford Street and old No. 3 firehouse at Young Street and Yankee Street. The fire dispatching was performed by firefighters here until 1995 when a third medic unit was placed in-service at Station No. 85 and the Police Communication Center began dispatching for the Division of Fire. When Station No. 82 was opened in the Blue Ball area in 1997, the personnel that staffed Ladder 83 were moved to that station to staff Engine 82.
Service Equipment
Depending on the equipment available, personnel from Engine 83 may respond as a fourth medic unit using Medic 86 or as Ladder 83. When this happens, Engine 83 is not in-service due to the lack of personnel. When platoon strength is at 21 Medic 86 is staffed as a front line medic unit, this fourth unit being available approximately 180 days of 365 days per year.
Offices
Fire Administration, Training and Prevention offices are all located here. It is also at headquarters that the majority of training is conducted due to its centralized location.
Headquarters
Fire Headquarters is located at Roosevelt Boulevard and Wicoff Street and houses Medic 83, Engine 83, Battalion 80, a reserve engine, and a reserve Medic.
Staffing
Medic 83 is staffed with 2 paramedics, Engine 83 is staffed with 3 personnel and Medic 86 is staffed with 2 paramedics when platoon strength is at 21.
