The Historic Commission was previously called the Council on Landmarks and Historic Districts. It was established by Ordinance 2010-56, which states that The Historic Commission shall consist of a minimum of eight members, all residents of the City, and every attempt shall be made to include the following areas of expertise: A registered architect; A professional landscape architect, historian, archaeologist, or city planner; A person whose education and experience qualify him or her in building construction; A member of the Middletown Historical Society; An attorney; Electors of the City: (a) one elector who neither resides nor owns property in a designated historic district or a zoning district which requires approval of the Council for alterations and/or modifications; and, (b) one elector from each historic district or zoning district which requires approval of this Council for alterations and/or modifications, who shall reside or own property in such district and a member of the Planning Commission.
With this particular composition of members, the historic commission is uniquely qualified to help maintain the rich history of the City of Middletown and help the City usher in a new era of development without losing the charm that the city has cultivated throughout time. Meetings of the historic commission consist of approving and advising developers on plans for structure, signage, and all exterior modifications for buildings within the city’s historic districts. The City maintains two historical districts: The South Main Street District and The Highlands Historic District.
In order to advise on the development and construction of the historical zones, the Commission works closely with developers, and city employees to read and interpret the standards for construction that have been set out via ordinance. The ability to work with the ordinances and maintain the structural integrity of the historical districts helps the City develop into the future while maintaining treasured charm.
The Historic Commission meets on an as needed basis.
